SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The objective of this European Operational Air Quality Forecasting System is to provide to the general public and efficient and reliable operational system to predict the Air Quality at European level.

The system uses WRF/CHEM (NOAA,US) model to simulate the atmospheric dispersion process. The system is running with the CBM-Z-MOSAIC chemical mechanism.

The CMAQ model is running over a domain with 50 km spatial resolution by using EMEP polar projection emission inventory and transformed to Lambert Conformal Conical Projection which is the projection showed in the Internet maps. The model domain has 109 x 99 x 12 grid cells.

The Emission processor is the EMIMO V2.0 model (UPM, 2005) which includes the EPER registry from the Environmental European Agency. The model uses the CLC2000 landuse data for EU25 domain (100 m spatial resolution) and USGS 1 km for the outside EU25 domain areas. The system uses GTOPO 30’’ for topography. Meteorological boundary conditions are provided by the daily global GSM forecasts as obtained from NCEP servers.

The system is providing hourly, daily maxima and daily average information related to O3, SO2, NO2, CO, PM10, PM2.5 and NH3 pollutants.

The system architecture is configured in a way that at about 12:00 p.m. the simulation should be uploaded on-line in the Internet.

The system is operating as an experimental product. No guarantee is made for a continuous service since this tool is provided with the only financial effort of the Environmental Software and Modelling Group (UPM).
